Executive Director

D?nal grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and since then has lived in Virginia, Georgia, Virginia again, New York, Virginia again, Ireland, Massachusetts, Virginia again, Vermont, Indiana, Vermont again, Iowa, Maine and (whew!) Iowa again.

In his previous career, D?nal was a freelance advertising copywriter and freelance writer, and is the co-author of 40 books published by Time-Life Books, National Geographic and Readers' Digest. He earned a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from the University of Iowa.

D?nal completed his family medicine residency in Cedar Rapids, then practiced at a rural clinic in West Liberty, Iowa, before joining the CRMEF faculty in 2008, never imagining then that he would end up Program Director in 2012. In addition to being Program Director, he supervises all rotating residents at the St. Luke's Wound Healing Center, where he practices both advanced wound care and hyperbaric medicine. He is also Board-eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Moreover, D?nal is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, a recipient of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors Program Director Award.

D?nal is married to Karen, and they are the parents of five children: Zoey, Brendan, Siobh?n, Tiern?n and D?nal. He enjoys writing, reading, Notre Dame football and, with Karen, tours with Bruce Springsteen (well, ok, we do have to buy tickets!). He has been the Program Director since early 2012 and was named the Executive Director in late 2017.
