Cedar Rapids Family Medicine Residency

Program Benefits

Stipends

The stipends for all residents are competitive with those offered by other Programs and are reviewed annually. Stipends for 2009-2010 are as follows:

  • First Year $49,000
  • Second Year $50,000
  • Third Year $52,000

Computers

The Program will provide a notebook and handheld computer for each resident to use during their training. As a resident you have full access to the Carver College of Medicine Hardin Library off-campus collection of journals and databases.

Vacations

The Program allows 23 working days of “paid time off” per year as permitted by the American Board of Family Medicine. This encompasses sick time, personal days and vacations. The ABFM also allows 5 additional working days per year to attend national meetings or conferences.

Travel

All residents are encouraged to attend at least one scientific meeting and/or ATLS training. Your registration fees and expenses will be paid by the foundation up to $1,500 over the three years.  In addition, expenses for travel to present research and exhibits, or otherwise represent the Program, are provided.

Insurance

All residents are covered by workman’s compensation and malpractice insurance. The malpractice policy provides coverage while moonlighting and on out-of-town rotations or preceptors.  In addition, each resident is provided with $50,000 of life and accidental death insurance, as well as long-term disability insurance. You are eligible for one of our excellent medical and dental insurance options. The Foundation covers the major portion of the premium; the resident contributes a small portion of the premium.  The Foundation also offers a Flexible Benefits Program, sometimes known as a “cafeteria plan”.  This plan allows participants to set aside pre-tax money, up to certain limits, for childcare and /or medical and dental expenses such as daycare deductible costs or other non-covered expenses.  Most tax consultants strongly recommend employees take advantage of these tax saving opportunities.

Dues/Licenses/USMLE 3

The Program provides payment of all state medical and state and federal pharmacy licenses.  Dues to the American Academy of Family Physicians, county and state medical societies and the AMA or AOA are also covered each of the three years. Step 3 of the USMLE or COMLEX testing is also covered by the Foundation if taken while in training.

Uniforms and Laundry

Lab coats are provided by the Foundation and laundered by the hospitals.

Moving expenses

Obtaining housing in Cedar Rapids is not a problem, whether you choose to rent or buy. The Foundation will pay you $1,000 to help defer the expenses incurred in your move to Cedar Rapids.

Recreation

Residents have access to exercise equipment at both hospitals.  The annual mid-winter retreat is an important opportunity for relaxation and reflection for residents, faculty and their families.

ACLS/PALS/NRP

The program provides ACLS, PALS, and NRP training and certification free to all residents during the first block of academic year.
